Teaching

I have taught the following graduate courses since earning my PhD from UC Berkeley in 2006:

  • PPA756: Policy and Administration in Developing Countries (twice in the Department of Public Administration at the Maxwell School of Syracuse University)

o    Professor Ear has a great wealth of experience and knowledge

o    He’s a pretty smart and nice guy

    o    Good class, good discussions

o    All the topics discussed in class are useful, makes me think about some of these issues deeper. Good semester! I’ve learned a lot.

o    The course design and reading materials is excellent

    • NS3011: Research and Writing in National Security Affairs (twice)

o    Professor Ear was very approachable and down to earth. Enjoyed the class

o    Prof Ear is a dedicated professional. He was always prepared and very willing to accept feedback to make the course better as well as his own instruction.

o    the instructor did a great job of covering the course material

o    You were one of the best instructors I had.

o    Dr Ear is a good professor and made the best he could with a syllabus that has obviously been put together as an afterthought by other professors.

o    The instructor was outstanding for his first classes at NPS. I hope to have him for other courses.

o    This was a great class- introduced me to subjects (through the reading) that I would have never read otherwise. I like the writing assignments, this course gave me a good base on how to put papers together while I’m at NPS. Prof. E. also shared his experiences, which was very interesting and helpful. Overall, I enjoyed the course.

o    Sir, You are a very intelligent instructor who I feel is quickly finding the pulse of NPS and the military mind. You handle criticism very well and are willing to listen to student input in order to modify and improve the quality of our classroom instruction.

o    Dr. Ear is a good teacher who is stuck with a sucky class.

    • NS3026: Introduction to Stabilization and Reconstruction (three times and again in Fall Quarter 2011)

o    Interesting class and the material was very relevant.

o    You provided a very clear presentation of your class expectations – You allowed every opportunity for the students to succeed or fail according to the level of effort that they were willing to put into the class. If students came prepared to class, submitted drafts of papers, and etc, they would succeed. If the students tried to slide through and give a minimum level of effort, you gave them the flexibility to hang themselves. – You expressed a constant interest in getting feedback on how to improve the course

o    A good and knowledgeable professor who made my learning in class very enjoyable and lively.

o    A very good course that I enjoyed being a part of. The instructor worked hard to bring everyone into the discussion and used a good mix of lecture and class discussion.

o    Nice class. It was interesting, I feel like I learned a lot. I enjoyed the professor’s flexibility, giving the students input on the form the classes would take.

o    Very intelligent and passionate Professor. Always accessible, always providing inputs and soliciting for feedbacks, always eager to make the course more productive and enjoyable! Finds ways to teach from any environment (class, Sakai, personal home communications on off duty hours, phone, Walmart, etc.) You will learn the concepts! Highly impressive and very motivated instructor, to say the least. Outstanding!

o    An interesting course effectively covered.

    • NS3645: Political Economy of Asia (once, and again in Summer Quarter 2010)

o    It can’t be said enough how much effort Prof Ear put into framing the class to make it the most beneficial. The class seemed a little rough in the beginning, however after he solicited feedback he revamped it and it was right on track. Excellent job of laying out objectives, balance of teaching and class participation balanced with films to drive concepts home. I really appreciate how much he cared about how the class was progressing and ensuring we were getting what we should out of it. Thank you Prof Ear!

    o    Great learning experience.

    • NS4026: Capstone Seminar in Stabilization and Reconstruction (three times and again in Summer Quarter 2010)

o    enjoyed the course very much

o    Retain and promote this professor. Dr. Ear encourages the students to engage in diverse research subjects while sharing valuable information with the rest of the class.

o    Course material was very relevant and useful to enhance understanding of the subject. Professor was willing to listen to students suggestions and ideas for improving and revising course load and work while the class was in session.

o    A well knowledgeable professor. It was nice having him as my instructor and he really made me to like the subject. The material and knowledge gained will be highly useful to me in my future undertakings.

o    The class size and format were excellent. I really enjoy discussing the cases, especially when we applied concepts learned from the week’s reading assignments. Thank you very much!

o    I really enjoyed your classes. So, thank you for the effort you spend in making such a complex subject so interesting.

o    Enjoyed the course. Some informative discussions throughout the qtr. Thanks for applying feedback from previous quarters and always looking for ways to improve the class.

o    You are a good instructor and can see your willingness to grow. Much success to you.

    • NS4079: Advanced Directed Study in Labor and Livelihood for Post-Conflict Environments (twice)

o    Professor Ear has done a wonderful job guiding our group and challenging our understanding of the course material.

o    The workshop, meetings and course material were well organized.

If the need arises in Academic Year 2011, I will teach NS4060: Special Topics in Stabilization and Reconstruction, focusing on labor and/or agriculture.

I use the Naval Postgraduate School Collaborative Learning & Research Portal which is based on Sakai as of 2009 for all my courses.

I have also taught three 3.5 day Center for Stabilization and Reconstruction Studies-sponsored workshops on labor and conflict (twice) and agriculture and conflict.
